›A word about diesel.

I suddenly found myself writing a lot about traveling in a UAZ, about its current maintenance, and occasionally mentioning some road points. However, I have never written any general post regarding a certain side of owning this UAZ. I decided to catch inspiration and tell a little about something common UAZ. Or just general automotive. I'll try, maybe it will make sense.
So, the topic of today's multi-letter is "Diesel: Terrible Fears and Terrible Pleasures".

My first car was a gasoline UAZ-Hunter with a ZMZ-409 engine. After that, I bought myself a current UAZ with a ZMZ-514 diesel engine. Before that, I had never owned a diesel engine and was held captive by various horror stories about it. Now I have experienced the joys and sorrows of owning a diesel car. And at the moment my subjective opinion is: diesel is cool! Well, fuck you with your "lighters": D
Diesel is not as scary as people who have never owned it say. Let's just say that a diesel engine simply requires more experience on the part of its owner and a little more careful handling. And then he will not be a hassle.
I want to note right away that my experience is based on what I own - and I own a UAZ-Hunter car with a ZMZ-514 euro-2 diesel engine, which has a mechanical injection pump, a turbine and a volume of 2.2 liters. My comparisons are mainly based on the experience of owning a previous gasoline car - UAZ-Hunter with a 2.7-liter ZMZ-409 Euro-0 gasoline engine.

So, what I really like about a diesel UAZ compared to its gasoline counterpart:
1. Fuel consumption. The trick is not at all to save something somewhere, no. The trick is not in some mythical economic expediency. The chip is simply at an expense, as such. Let's be honest: the gasoline engine in the UAZ is gluttonous. I do not believe in fairy tales about 11 liters of AI-92 in the city. I believe in what was on my previous gasoline UAZ, but there were about 12-13 liters of AI-92 on the highway in a quiet (!) Mode and about 15 liters in the city; if in traffic jams, then up to 17. And this is quite normal for gasoline. My current diesel eats 10 liters anytime, anywhere. On the road. In the town. In traffic jams. At traffic lights. Empty. Laden. 10 liters. Okay, 11 he ate on average when traveling to the Kola Peninsula, where I sometimes drowned over 100 km / h, while I had a boot load up to the ceiling, a spare wheel was on the roof, and several hundred kilometers were primers. Gasoline will not allow such a consumption in any way, whoever says what: traffic jam - higher consumption; long work at xx - higher consumption, etc. What gives a lower consumption of a diesel engine? Well, firstly, it personally gives me moral peace - in itself it's nice when no traffic jams affect fuel consumption. And, secondly, it gives a power reserve. Suppose Hunter has two 35-liter tanks for a total of 70 liters. At diesel consumption 10 liters per hundred we get a power reserve of 700 kilometers. With a city gasoline consumption of 15 liters per hundred, we get a cruising range of 460 kilometers, and a highway consumption of 13 liters per hundred - 530 kilometers. The difference is not at all in favor of gasoline ...;)
2. Deadlift on the bottom. In my opinion, everything is clear here. In terms of thrust, the diesel engine outperforms the gasoline engine. For example, on New Year we competed in a race in a low gear with a gasoline UAZ-Patriot, who would come to the finish line slower. Hunter won with a very large lag ...;) And it's nice to climb hills at idle, checking at what steepness the engine will pull out in direct gear, and at which it will ask for a lower one. Due to this thing, extremely effective engine braking is also present on the Hunter (I suppose that this is due to the cable drive of the gas pedal: I took my foot off the pedal - the fuel supply was cut off sharply - the car suddenly loses in speed; although on gasoline I also had a cable on throttle, but there was no such a sharp loss of speed). Once, my friend, who was driving behind me in Skoda, even scolded me about this, they say, you at least touch the brake pedal so that your feet light up, otherwise you let go of the gas pedal - and I have emergency braking because of this :) And you can also start off in first gear, and then immediately turn on the second and drive it, without touching the gas at all. It is also possible in the third, but why force the engine)) And at a speed of 50 km / h, you can turn on the fifth gear and continue to go as if on a machine.
3. Cat's rumbling. Well, that's purely subjective. A serviceable diesel engine rattles very nicely. You can listen to it endlessly.
4. Inability to overheat the motor. On the previous 409m I was worn out with overheating. I'm three - damn it, THREE! - the engine boiled once (the overheating lamp came on, it did not reach boiling antifreeze), as a result - a punctured gasket and a cylinder head that went off for grinding. Overheating was cured only with a second powerful electric fan in front of the radiator, which had two control options: manual from the toggle switch in the cabin and automatic (it worked at 87 degrees, turned off at 82). In a diesel engine, it is like this: if there is coolant in the system, if it has not leaked out anywhere, and if the pump is working and the radiator is not very clogged, then it is impossible to overheat the diesel. Checked. At idle, it cools down. The maximum, to which I was able to warm up the 514th - up to 83-85 degrees in +35 heat in a traffic jam. He refused to bask anymore. In the summer, he independently (the cooling system is fully standard) keeps the temperature at 80 degrees. In winter - 60 without cardboard, 70 with cardboard. This is a big plus off-road, when an increased load is applied to the engine. And again, some off-road ambushes diesel is able to pass almost at idle, unlike gasoline. And at idle it cools down, yes.


Now about the controversial aspects of owning a diesel UAZ. How I perceive them and what I think about it. In fact, these are the very things because of which diesel requires a little more attention to itself than gasoline.
I think all these things are a matter of habit. They can scare the first hundreds of kilometers, but then you get used to them and perceive them as something natural.
1. More expensive service, more frequent oil changes, etc. They say that current gasoline engines require an engine oil change every 15-20 thousand km. Allegedly technology, nano, modernity and blah blah. Again, I do not really believe in this because of my conservatism. On gasoline, I changed the oil every 10 thousand (10w40). On a diesel engine, I change every 8 thousand (5w40, for a turbine). Yes, replacement is obtained more often and more expensive, but what to do, a car is not as cheap as we would like, and if you want to ensure a long life for this car, then be kind enough to invest in it a little more than the toad requires. Regarding the cost of spare parts, everything is correct, for some unknown reason, the cost of a spare part for the 514th is sometimes comparable to an airplane. Piston - about 5 thousand rubles. (at 409th for this money you can buy a piston completely); a generator (only applies to Euro-2) before the crisis cost about 15-20; the pump is about a thousand more expensive than the 409th pump; a thousand more expensive timing repair kit, valve cover; one and a half - flywheel; for a few thousand - the head of the block. This, of course, is not very happy, but about this I can only say one thing - well, it happens :)
2. Warming up the passenger compartment in winter. It is believed that in a diesel car it is very cold in the cabin. From the experience of the trip to Tyumen and the adventures there in minus thirty, I realized one thing: the main thing is to warm up the engine at least to 50 degrees, ideally to 60. And then in the salon you can arrange Tashkent, put on swimsuits and arrange the equator. Even the rear passenger gets warm (well, it just stays cold in the trunk). The oven fries in such a way that you can heat the pizza under the hot air flow. For this, there is a special button in Hunter's salon. I just turned on the stove at 50 degrees - the air is warm. Turned on this button - the air is HOT! :)
But, of course, up to these 60 degrees, the engine must be somehow warmed up. To do this, you need to either go or accelerate. Because - we read above! - at idle, the diesel engine cools down: D In this sense, the most modern technology helps a lot - Russian Winter Card, installed on the face in front of the radiator. This is usually enough. I personally don't see any reason to insulate the hood and engine additionally - I think such insulation will be required for more extreme temperatures (-40, for example). But an engine wrapped in a blanket at -10 can be overheated, albeit a diesel engine.
It is worth noting one more point: a long warm-up of the diesel engine at idle after starting. Warming up under load immediately after starting the engine, I categorically do not accept, especially in low temperatures... Therefore, if it is -30 on the street, I do this: start the car, close the doors ... and go home to drink tea or coffee. For the next 20-30 minutes. During this time, the engine will master its 40 degrees, during which the stove begins to blow warm and into which you can safely drive and heat it further.
3. Starting in cold weather. The terrible truth: a serviceable diesel engine with working glow plugs, serviceable injectors and LIQUID diesel fuel starts up without any problems even in severe frost. Of course, I've never come across -50 in my life. However, at -25, my diesel starts, as they say, with a half-turn, as in the summer, but at -35 it starts only the second time after the battery wakes up a little and comes to life. But, in any case, he did it himself without any additional pre-heaters. I think, if you put on a webasta, there will be beauty in general (however, with such warm winters as we have in Moscow and the Moscow region, somehow the webasta is not needed).
So if the diesel engine does not start in frost, it means that either the diesel fuel is frozen, or there is a problem with candles or injectors, or compression in the engine is hot ...
4. The quality of diesel fuel. Since my car does not have a Common Rail system, there are no pump injectors, and there is only a mechanical injection pump, then, in theory, the quality of the fuel does not affect the fuel equipment so much. Nevertheless, I try to refuel always and everywhere at branded gas stations - Lukoil, Gazpromneft, Trasse (and in Murmansk - StatOil :)). Somehow I don't really like RosNeft =) Another question is diesel fuel in the off-season (autumn-winter), when it gets colder, and summer diesel is splashing on the dispensers, and in winter you can run into summer fuel somewhere. In this case, branded gas stations are not such a panacea (I warmed diesel with a gas burner after Lukoil). Nevertheless, the branded ones are again less likely to fill up the summer diesel. The point is not in favor of the diesel engine =) But again, there is no horror in this. First, there is such a thing as antigel. Secondly, I personally also have three fuel heaters from Nomakon. Thirdly, in winter, you can carry a blowtorch or a gas burner in the car, just in case. But this is for the most extreme case.
5. Care of the turbine. There is no horror here either - I just got used to pouring synthetic oil into the engine and letting the turbine "cool down" after working under load before turning off the engine (I let the engine idle for 2-3 minutes before turning it off). If you are too lazy to wait 2-3 minutes, you can put a turbo timer.


And, finally, about what I do not like specifically about my diesel.
1. Slowness. I don’t know how to properly name this item. ZMZ-514 is not the smartest engine for a heavy two-ton vehicle. The turbine saves, without the turbine the car would not go at all. It is important to get used to the peculiarities of driving this car in order to be able to overtake in the oncoming lane without fear, and even it is banal to climb a very steep climb without losing speed. The turbine lasts closer to two thousand revolutions. When overtaking, it is useless to downshift, as they do on gasoline, this will not give any effect. In the case of overtaking by 514m, you just need to spin the engine before turning on the turbine, when acceleration is in progress, and only then start advancing. At the same time, in winter and ice conditions, it is necessary to give the load smoothly, not abruptly, otherwise, when the turbine is turned on, the car will receive a good kick in the butt, which may end in a skid. In a steep climb, you also need to fly under the whistle of a turbine, otherwise the car suddenly loses speed and becomes like a loaded KAMAZ that does not go up a hill. It is useless to press the gas pedal sharply and to the floor - the fuel system slows down a lot, so the effect of a sharp depression of the pedal will be the same as if you were pressing the pedal slowly, in accordance with the acceleration :)
2. Limited top speed. In general, according to the passport, it is stated that the maximum speed of the car is 120 km / h. In principle, I believe in this. I heard some stories about how people drove this diesel engine under 140 km / h. However, I myself have never done such things - by God, people, I sincerely do not understand how you do it :) In my opinion, the maximum to which I accelerated my Hunter is about 117 km / h (according to the navigator; the speed was much higher on the speedometer). I remember that the gasoline Hunter knew how to drive many times faster, I set the record for the maximum speed at around 137 km / h. However, to be honest, at speeds over 110 km / h it becomes quite difficult to drive this car. Hunter's handling is poor, and the diesel engine howls hysterically from under the hood. Perhaps the normal speed for a diesel Hunter on the highway is about 100 km / h. In principle, this is not bad, but ... let's admit that driving at such a speed on, for example, the M-4 "Don" highway, where in some places the restrictions reach 130 km / h, it can be a little sad: D And even loud ... although this is a problem soundproofing the machine, not the diesel engine.
3. Overtaking in the oncoming lane. I spoke about them above: ZMZ-514 is a slow engine. It is safe to overtake on it only when the oncoming lane is clear to the horizon.
4. Acceleration when leaving a minor road. Actually, it can also be attributed to the first point. Before the turbine was turned on, ZMZ-514 was slow and sad. It is unlikely that you will be able to get off the secondary road and accelerate sharply on it. Therefore, in the case of an unregulated intersection with a dense traffic, it can be quite difficult to leave it on the left because it cannot get a sharp acceleration from the spot.
5. Legendary unreliability of ZMZ-514. In general, I really can't say anything about this: the previous owner changed the cracked cylinder head :) So I just go and believe. My sincere faith drowns out the fear of breakdowns in me.

(or 469), which lasted about thirty years on the assembly line. Outwardly, this model is similar to its predecessor, but it was created on a completely new platform. The use of new components and unexpected technical solutions allowed to create a dynamic, stable, economical and reliable car. At the same time, we managed to preserve the advantages inherent in all Ulyanovsk SUVs: low price with excellent cross-country ability.

Immediately striking are the new, safer and more modern plastic bumpers that creep onto the fenders, and the sixteen-inch wheels that complement the decorative fenders. Sliding windows instead of turning vents now make life much easier for passengers and the driver. The visibility on the UAZ Hunter Diesel is now slightly better than on the 469th model. The closed tight loop of the door sealing made the interior of the car less noisy, it prevents the accumulation of moisture and maintains the microclimate in the interior.

The rear door is hinged, the side door is installed on the UAZ Hunter Diesel version with an awning. The spare tire, hidden in the cover, also looks good. For a surcharge, you can put alloy wheels or in a metallic color on the car.


The UAZ Hunter Diesel salon has also changed significantly. Now it is not so ascetic, which makes it possible to comfortably accommodate both passengers and the driver of the car. The front seats have been redesigned. They are upholstered in fabric and adjustable. But the steering column cannot be adjusted either in height or in tilt.

The rear passengers are now also more comfortable. Even more tall people enough legroom. The rear seats are only adjustable for the backrest angle. If you need to spend the night in the car, then rear seats can be expanded. A couple more seats can be added to the luggage compartment.

The footrest, despite the rather high seating position, is not provided. The torpedo is made of dark gray plastic. It is not very convenient to read the readings from the speedometer, since it is somewhere under the steering wheel. The center console has gauges for fuel, battery charging, oil pressure and engine temperature. It is also difficult to read information from them, since the instruments are located parallel to the torpedo line.


It is worth buying a Diesel for those who want to operate this car in harsh winters... The floors of the car are covered with warm carpet. The stove is turned on with a switch under the console. The temperature is not regulated, but you can change the blowing force (strong and medium modes). There are air ducts only above and below the windshield.

UAZ Hunter Diesel is equipped with a 2.2-liter ZMZ-5143 engine with a power of 98 hp. It can also have a turbo diesel from Poland with 86 hp. and a volume of 2.4 liters.
